Here is the list of equipment from the 3.5 Dungeons and Dragons Players Hand Book. As you can see, it's sorted into various categories. A new character being created should only have access to the simple weapons section and various other weapons might be found through out the campaigns and little quests your character takes part in.

You can view it in your browser or download it for easy access, it's up to you. As you can see, there are various things in the list as well. For the general items, a starting character should have the Standard Adventurers Kit, which includes:
- Backpack (Empty)
- Bedroll
- Flint and Steel
- Pouch, Belt (Empty)
- Rations (Ten Days)
- Rope, Hempen (50 ft.)
- Torches (2)
- Waterskin
Rather than list all this stuff out, just say you have an Adventurers Starting Kit in their inventory. Still working on stuff, so anything can be subject to change for this altered Dungeons and Dragons format.
